Aaron Browne from Kinnitty ... helped Cistercian College to win the Leinster Schools Senior Cup.

Kinnittys aaron helps roscrea side make rugby history

Kinnitty native Aaron Browne played his part in a little bit of rugby history last Tuesday by helping Cistercian College, Roscrea finally end their long wait to win the Leinster Schools Senior Cup when beating Belvedere College in the final at the RDS.

Browne played in the second row (number 5) for Cistercian as they triumphed on an 18-11 scoreline. Cistercian had lost five previous finals in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup but were worthy winners of Tuesday’s decider.

In an evenly fought first half, during which both sides showed some early nerves, Cistercian’s scores came from a Tim Foley penalty and a try by the player of the match Dan Trayers, as the sides trudged off level at half-time, 8-8.

A marvellous second half try, in the 48th minute, by Daniel Keane proved highly decisive to the outcome, a try which was superbly converted from near the sideline by Foley, who also added a late penalty to secure the win.

Cistercian College has been in existence for more than 100 years, operating as a seven day secondary boarding school for boys, located just outside Roscrea town (close to the Offaly border). The school is renowned for high standards in academia, sport and music.

Cistercian College will host a full day Easter Rugby Camp for all those interested on Saturday, March 21, focusing on coaching and training, with past and present students playing on a provincial level for Leinster, Connacht and Munster present on the day.
