Edenderry RFC Notes

Thirds win Midland League. Edenderry Thirds team completed the Midland League Grand Slam with a comprehensive victory over Mullingar in Coolavacoose on Sunday. The game began in a snowstorm and the underfoot conditions were very tricky. The first half was a scrappy affair, punctuated by handling errors and penalties and neither side could make a breakthrough. Thirteen minutes into the second half, substitute Sean O"Donnell took advantage of a defensive error by Mullingar and barged over for a try. Martin Murray added another try that was converted by Stephen Cummins. With 20 minutes to go the Edenderry backs worked the ball out the line and Brian O"Carroll touched down under the posts. Veteran Ivan Lewis then scored two tries to put the match out of reach and Stephen Cummins added two more conversions. Congratulations to coach Rocky Fabian and all of the squad. Seconds beaten in tough local derby Edenderry seconds were narrowly beaten 15-9 by local rivals Tullamore in the second round of the Towns Cup on Sunday last. Tullamore took the lead with an early try and penalty to lead the game 8-0 but the resilient Edenderry team battled hard and reduced the lead to - 6 with two penalties from Dunne. The Edenderry lineout struggled on the windy day, and the Tullamore defensive lineout was excellent. In every other part of the game Edenderry held their own and put Tullamore"s scrum under serious pressure. Tom Murray at open side wing-forward tackled very well throughout the game and Rushe and Johns hit rucks with everything they had. The game was very even throughout and Edenderry looked to be gaining the advantage, with some great work from Potterton, Guing and McEvoy, but Tullamore got quick ball after a number of rucks and mauls and sub Andrew Melville, Tullamore"s first team coach, ran from just outside the Edenderry 22 shaking off a number of tackles to score under the posts, and Tullamore added the conversion. Edenderry did enjoy the majority of the possession from then on but only managed to add one more penalty and the game ended 15-9.
