Butler delivers the goods in Peter English 625 race

The annual Peter English 625 took place on Tuesday evening last with one lap of the tarmac circuit. In the senior men"s race Maurice Fitzgerald led out followed closely by Darren Butler, Mick Murphy and Jody O"Reilly. At half way Butler and Murphy were battling it out but Butler then kicked for home and ran on very strong to claim victory in a time of 1.42.6 much to the delight of his supporters. Jody O"Reilly ran on strong to finish second just ahead of the fast finishing Maurice Fitzgerald. Liz Cuskelly led the Ladies home in a good time of 1.54.1 followed by Martina Conlon. In the Masters Men"s race Johnny Feery led from the start and despite been overtaken by Joe Wrafter with 250 metres to go he quickly regained the lead and came home the winner in a time of 1.49.6 with Joe Wrafter second in 1.52.6. Nicole Cuskelly won the Junior Girls race in 1.58.3 while Aaron O"Leary Doyle was best in the Junior Boys in a time of 1.57.8. National Track & Field League The first rounds of the National League took place in Cork and Antrim last Sunday with both the Harriers" Ladies and Men"s teams travelling to Cork. The Ladies are competing in division 1 and were drawn against Kerry, Kilkenny, Galway, Kildare and St Abban"s. The Men are in the Premier division and were up against Leevale, St Abban"s, West Waterford, Meath, Menapians, Dundrum South Dublin and Galway. There was a great sense of team spirit in both Ladies and Men"s teams and every athlete fought hard for points to help their team"s cause. The ladies team finished in fourth position with 84 points behind Kerry, Kilkenny and St Abban"s. The Men placed third on the day with 94 points behind St Abban"s with 104 points and Meath on 103. Individual results were not available at the time of going to press and will be published next week. Round 2 will take place on July 5th in either Dublin or Athlone and hopes are high that both teams can build on Sunday"s performance and so qualify for the National League finals which will be held in Tullamore on August 8th. Clashmore 5 Mile Road Race Pauline and Barry Lambe competed in the Clashmore 5 mile road race in Waterford last Friday night. Pauline continued her good run of success on the south east road circuit when she won the ladies race in a time of 30.07. Barry finished in 27th place in a time of 30.38. Congratulations Well done to club member Tony McCormack and to former member Declan Harvey on their recent election to Tullamore Town Council.
