Offaly student film makers in the spotlight

Young Offaly film makers who got to try their hand at everything from scripting to sound effects were in the spotlight recently, when their efforts were shown at the Storm Cinema in Portlaoise on May 25. Two schools from Offaly took part in the Film in School (FÍS) project that was set up in 2000 to explore film as a medium of expression in relation to the arts and introduce children to aspect of the film making process. Six films were included in the day's schedule, including films from both Scoil Eoin Phoil 2 and VTOS Tullamore. Scoil Eoin Phoil students made a short film in tribute to their principal Gerry Walsh, due to retire this summer. The film was a warm and special tribute to Sir Walsh, who has been associated with the school for the past 31 years. Meanwhile VTOS Tullamore students produced a film called "Zero 2 Hero", a series of short films based on four well known superheroes that addressed four important issues. Bananaman showed the importance of a healthy fruit diet. Superman took to the skies to put a stop to air pollution. Catwoman put her foot down on bullying and Batman took on an evil factory to show the importance of recycling.
