Green light for waste facility at Derryclure

A decision by An Bord Pleanála means it looks likely Derryclure will be home to a waste facility into the future, though the landfill in the area run by Offaly County Council will be closed in the coming months. Glanpower Ltd have had planning permission for an energy from waste facility from Offaly County Council verified by An Bord Pleanála, giving them the green light to begin construction. Glanpower Ltd originally looked for permission for the project from Offaly County Council in early September 2010. According to the planning application the proposed site was to accommodate a pyrolysis system for the recovery of energy from biomass and waste, with an approximate output of six megawatts of renewable electricity for export to the national grid and five megawatts of heat. Access to the site was proposed via the Offaly County Council road to Derryclure Landfill. Glanpower Ltd submitted further information to Offaly County Council regarding the proposal in late October last year, and the project was given the green light by the local council on January 14 this year. An appeal in early February brought the proposal to the attention of An Bord Pleanála, but with revised conditions attached the planning body also gave the project the go-ahead last week. Up to 940 locals who signed a petition to An Bord Pleanála objecting to the project are disappointed with the outcome. Planning conditions for the project number 18 in total, and include submission of a traffic management plan by Glanpower Ltd and records of all waste deliveries to be submitted to Offaly County Council on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as well as a maximum of 18 heavy goods vehicles to the site per day and a maximum of 75,000 tonnes of biomass and municipal solid waste per year.
