Body of missing man recovered from Shannon

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out today on the body of Michael Egan. Twenty-four year old Mr Egan's body was pulled from the Shannon yesterday morning (Thursday) by volunteers taking part in a search effort for him. Mr Egan from Five Alley, Birr, had been missing since the early hours of October 17, when he was last seen at approximately 3am on the Banagher to Cloghan Road. Speaking to the Offaly Independent yesterday shortly after Mr Egan's body had been recovered from the water Superintendent David Kavanagh said it was at least closure for Mr Egan's family. "It's been a long ten days for the family I'm sure," he said. Mr Egan's body was recovered from the water approximately one kilometre downriver from Banagher between 11.15am and 11.30am yesterday (Thursday) morning. It was brought to Banagher marina where it was met by a garda team, a priest and a local doctor and a short service took place. Some of Mr Egan's family were present and his body was identified at the marina before being taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore for a post-mortem today. Superintendent Kavanagh expressed his thanks for the effort made by voluntary groups as part of the search over the last ten days. "There was huge community spirit and support for the Egan family," he said.
