Record fare for Offaly rail ticket

An old rail ticket issued by the Irish Clara and Banagher Railway attracted a record-breaking bid of £3,200 at a recent auction in the UK. The first class single ticket entitling the holder to travel by rail from Banagher to Maryborough (now Portlaoise) was originally sold for just 9/4d in the early years of the 1900s. The ticket was part of a collection auctioned on November 16 last by Dominic Winter Book Auctions in Gloucestershire. The collection included tickets from the 1860s to the 1920s. The ticket from the Irish Clara and Banagher Railway was issued on April 11 in the first decade of the last century. An exact year cannot unfortunately be made out.
