Birr fundraises for Aimee after horse riding fall

A recent horse riding accident has led to the Birr community gathering together and organising a variety of fundraising events to fund lengthy rehabilitation. Twenty-nine year old local Aimee Milne suffered a fall on April 9 last while taking part in a charity ride and broke seven bones at the top of her neck. According to Aimee's father Ger she's now on the road to recovery, but that road is a long, and indeed, expensive one. Currently Aimee is in the spinal unit of the Mater Hospital in Dublin, and her family hopes that in time she will be transferred for rehabilitation in Dun Laoghaire. While Ger said medical costs are secondary to Aimee's injuries, they are nonetheless an important factor in her recovery. To that end locals have set up a 'Friends of Aimee' group that aims to raise funds to support the former brand manager with Irish Distillers after her accident. "We know Aimee would do the same for us if it was one of us," the group's Facebook page says. Already a table quiz, a tractor drive and a benefit dance has been held in Aimee's honour in Birr. The latest contribution comes from local hairdresser Sarah Masterson of Sarah's Hair Salon on Connaught Street, who has vowed to donate €2 to the cause for every customers that comes through her salon door. Speaking to the Offaly Independent on Wednesday last Sarah said the initiative began on Tuesday, May 22, and will run until Saturday, June 2. While modest Sarah said her contribution to the cause won't be much, she's hoping it will help bring awareness to the local cause. Other events planned include an event in Nolan's pub on June 8, a night at the dogs in Shelbourne Park in Dublin on July 19 and a skydive on August 19 at Birr airfield. Aimee's dad Ger, mother Pauline and four younger siblings are all overcome by the efforts of local people. "Everything is very well organised and we're just overwhelmed by the support," Ger said. Thankful for all he has, Ger added that he and his family are positive people and are surrounded by wonderful support. "We're in a great place at the moment," he said. "The nurses and doctors have been fantastic. We're surrounded by great people. There's a great vibe for Aimee."
