Over half of Offalians married

Over half of all people aged 15 and over in Offaly are married. That's according to the latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures, contained in the latest publication in its series of Census 2011 results. The living arrangements publication shows that 29,754 people aged 15 and over in Offaly are hitched. The same figures suggest that 37.9% of people in Offaly aged 15 or more - or 22,266 - are single, making the county more loved up than the rest of Ireland. In the State as a whole 41.7% of those aged 15 or over were recorded as single on Census night 2011. Divorce figures for Offaly are broadly in line with the rest of the country, with 2.3% of those aged 15 or over recorded as divorced in Offaly on Census night, compared to 2.4% for the country as a whole. Census 2011 showed that a total of 604 people in Offaly were re-married, following the dissolution of their marriage. Overall men were much more likely to be re-married, with 35.1% of divorced men re-married compared with only 27.5% of women. There were 5,792 people living alone in Offaly on Census night, representing 7.6% of all people living in private households in the county at the time. Of those 2,108 were aged 65 and over. The majority of that number, at 62.4%, was made up of women.
