Ground breaking research being carried out by the Department of Orthopaedics at Tullamore hospital in association with Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and Harvard Medical School has been granted funding of €380,000 from the UK based Marie Curie Foundation. The funding windfall from one of the largest scientific funding organisations in the world has been secured by lead scientist on the project Dr Declan Devine of AIT. Speaking about the news consultation orthopaedic surgeon at Tullamore hospital Eoin Sheenan said the hospital team are honoured to be part of the research with AIT. "It is a huge endorsement to be funded by an organisation such as the Marie Curie Foundation and to be working alongside world leaders from Harvard University Boston in this endeavour," he added. It's hoped that the treatment of bone cancers and infections can be advanced as a result of the latest research. A study is to be undertaken in Harvard University and AIT, while the orthopaedic department in Tullamore will be involved in the scientific and clinical consultation process in the development of the study on bone healing. It's thought Tullamore hospital will trial the product in future in association with Harvard Medical School as part of the study.
