Road caution urged as conditions turn extreme

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has issued tips for motorists and other road users due to adverse weather conditions that are expected to continue over the coming days. Many areas are currently experiencing localised flooding, while sleet, snow and gale force winds are also being experienced. Temperatures are set to plummet over the weekend, with frost, snow and wind all on the cards for the weekend. RSA CEO Noel Brett has urged all motorists to slow down on the roads and take account of conditions. In light of flooding and gale force winds motorists are advised to monitor weather reports while travelling. Slowing down and allowing extra distance between your car and the one in front is also advised. Motorists are urged to take particular care when driving behind goods vehicles, as they generate a considerable amount of spray that reduces visibility. Motorists are advised to watch out for falling or fallen debris on roads, and remember that controlling a vehicle is often more difficult when driving in wind. Warnings are also being circulated about being mindful of surface water on roads. Motorists have no way of knowing how deep such water is, and it may even contain hidden objects that could cause damage to your car. Motorists driving through water are advised to drive slowly with a foot on the brake pedal for a short distance to help dry the brakes. Using dipped headlights at all times is advised, while checking tyre condition and pressure has also been urged. When driving in freezing temperatures motorists should watch for a polished or glossy road, which could signify black ice. Driving in snow meanwhile requires a gently does it attitute. Too much steering is bad and harsh braking and acceleration should be avoided. Using the highest gear possible is advised in order to avoid wheel spin, while low gears should be used when travelling downhill. Hanging on the tail lights of the vehicle ahead is particularly advised against in these conditions, as it gives a false sense of security. Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to wear bright clothing with reflective armbands or a reflective belt. They are also advised to take extra care when near traffic or crossing roads, especially in windy conditions. If walking or cycling in fog pedestrians and cyclists are asked to make themselves clearly visible by wearing hi-vis and reflective clothing and by carrying a torch.
