The newly launched policy document looks to ways to turn the tide for Tullamore for other struggling towns throughout the country.

FF launches "Streets Ahead"

A new commercial rates system including a surcharge for out of town centres, flexible parking charge systems and the abolition of upward only rent reviews form the backbone of a new Fianna Fail policy document – “Streets Ahead” - launched today (Friday) that sets out a vision for the future of Irish towns.

Speaking at the launch Offaly TD Barry Cowen said suffering towns need a concrete plan backed up by real actions to get them moving again. “Towns are a vital part of the economic and social life of communities,” he said. “This policy reflects the need to create safe lively town centres that form the heart of their communities.”

The policy document includes a number of initiatives to address the challenges facing many towns across Ireland. One of those initiatives is addressing commercial rates.

“We are proposing a new commercial rates system that incentives new businesses, has an inability to pay clause and places a rates surcharge on out of town centres that will help ensure a fairer rates system,” Deputy Cowen said. “This will help ensure new start-ups are encouraged and struggling retailers and businesses are given space to breathe.”

Deputy Cowen also reiterated Fianna Fail’s position to abolish upward only rent reviews to help tackle exorbitant rents as well as create a flexible parking charge system to encourage short term stays and reward return shoppers.
