Catalytic converters stolen in Birr

Offalians are warned to be on alert after a spate of catalytic converter robberies in Birr in the past week.

Sergeant Michael Dardis of Birr garda station said the stolen converters have a scrap value of at least €150 due to the metals they contain.

Jeeps have been targeted in the main, he said, adding that the replacement cost for such vehicles runs to at least €1,000.

Cars in driveways and roads have been hit, with thieves accessing the catalytic converters from the underside of vehicles and simply cutting them out.

Sgt Dardis said the only advice he can give motorists is to park cars in safe locations.

He also asked members of the public to remain alert for people they might think are working on cars in driveways or on the side of the street.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity should contact Birr garda station on 057 9169710 or any garda station.
