The Space Camp will take place in the grounds of Birr Castle.

Birr summer camp is out of this world

Summer camps for primary school children in Birr have just gotten a lot cooler! Space Camp Ireland are running a Space Camp in Birr Castle from July 1 until July 5, and it’s open to all primary level age children who have an interest in science.

“If learning to build your own rocket and launch, if meeting astronomers present at launch of the Mars Curiosity Rover at NASA or participating in workshops that recreate the sun appeals to your children - then Space Camp Ireland in Birr this July is the summer camp not to miss,” organisers say.

The upcoming camp has been organised by Birr Coderdojo as a fundraiser for the iLofar Digital Telescope Project based in Birr Castle Demesne. The camp will run in the pavilion in Birr Castle from 10am until 2pm daily. Its cost will be €60 per child and places will be strictly limited to 20.

Speaking about the camp Deardriu Lally of Birr Coderdojo said it’s running in Birr and Galway only this summer.

'We are delighted in Birr Coderdojo to be involved with Space Camp Ireland in facilitating the first ever Space Camp Ireland,” she said. “For those kids lucky enough to attend for the week, they will learn the science and engineering behind rockets, they will meet Deirdre Kelleghan and hear about her trip to NASA for the Mars Curiosity Rover and they will have the opportunity to quiz an astrophysist from Trinity College Dublin who will answer questions about the depths of space.”
