Help Mundy take "The Hit"

Supporters only have until midnight tomorrow (Thursday) to help Birr singer Mundy beat Finbar Furey in this week’s singles chart and as a result be part of the final of RTE’s new programme The Hit on Friday.

The programme that was aired this summer saw unknown songwriters sell their songs to established stars, who then battled it out two by two each episode to see which has the biggest hit.

The finale of the show takes place on Friday, August 30, with performances accompanied by the RTE Concert Orchestra.

Mundy’s potential hit is a song called Jigsaw Man, written by 44-year-old Mark Walsh from Dublin.

Mark wrote Jigsaw Man when he was going through a hard time and feeling lost in life, but the song is about making it through and finding happiness.

Mundy’s and Mark’s competition comes from performer Finbar Furey and songwriter Gerry Fleming. Fifty-six year old Gerry began writing his potential hit - The Last Great Love Song - six years ago, and his ambition as a songwriter is to overhear someone singing his songs.

Finbar Furey meanwhile will be well-known to most people as a singer, songwriter, musician and actor.

Speaking on Midlands 103 this morning (Wednesday), Mundy admitted he wouldn’t mind being beaten by his rival.

“I grew up in a bar in Birr,” he explained. “A bar back in the 80s wasn’t a bar without a Fureys album or ten. It’s like salt and pepper - you have to have them in the press!”

Though Finbar Furey is “a legend” to Mundy, he said he still hopes he can beat him. “The song that I’ve recorded is completely different,” he said. “I think it deserves to make it to the finale.”
