Birr residents warned of bogus callers

Gardai in Birr are warning locals to be on the alert, after an incident earlier this week whereby a caller to a house in the Bengal Lodge area of the town looked for money for work after purporting to be working on behalf of the council.

Speaking to the Offaly Independent Birr’s Sergeant Hugh West said the incident occurred on the evening of last Monday, October 14. He said a male called to the door of a residence in Bengal Lodge, and told the female who answered the door he was working on behalf of the council. He then looked for money for work carried out, Sgt West said.

Sgt West said it’s important locals are aware of potentially bogus callers in the area. He said anyone in doubt of whether or not a caller is who they say they are should ask for identification, and call the local garda station on 057 9169710 if necessary.
