Tullamore business owner completes mammoth charity cycle

Fifty-two-year-old Seamus Buckley, who owns Buckley Cycles in Tullamore, recently completed a record-breaking double Mizen to Malin cycle non-stop, and on the back of it raised almost €4,000 for heart and stroke charity Croi.

Using Athlone as their base, Seamus and Michael Murray (32) from Athlone cycled to Mizen Head and back, before taking a short break and then continuing to Malin Head and returning to finish in Athlone.

The round trip involved approximately 1,150km of cycling, which the men completed within a record-breaking 50 hours and 30 minutes.

The famous Mizen to Malin route has long been the holy grail of challenges for many Irish cyclists, but most would aim to do this one-way and spread it over a three to five days. Seamus said his motivation for the double was twofold.

“This has never been done before, and many say it cannot be done,” he explained. “Also, a very close and personal friend of mine suffered a number of heart attacks a few years ago and thanks to the work of Croi he made a full recovery.”
