Cowen says killeigh post office saved

Offaly Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen believes the future of Killeigh Post Office is now secure.

There were growing fears the post office would be lost to the county Offaly village.

Deputy Cowen said “I understand An Post has approved a suitable local applicant to take on the post office, securing its future in Killeigh.  The premises will continue now to serve the community as a local post office.  This is very important for the community; there has been a lot of concern about its future.'

“I want to commend the community and the local committee for their efforts and I am delighted to have been of assistance on this matter,' he remarked.

According to Deputy Cowen, “rural communities have suffered a lot from regressive cuts by Government in recent years.  Garda stations, small schools, community services and local banks have all been lost.'

He said this has led to an increased feeling of isolation and  'it is extremely important that the Killeigh Post Office remains a central part of the village and the community as a whole.”
