Suspected pipe bomb discovered in clara

A second suspected pipe bomb has been discovered by Gardai in Co Offaly this week.

The device was found in Clara today and it's understood it may have partially detonated. An Army bomb disposal team was called in to deal with the pipe bomb.

Gardai sealed off the area and called in the team after the device was discovered near Frederick Street in the town earlier today. The device was dealt with an the team have now left.

Gardai are conducting a search of the area. A garda spokesman said the incident is under investigation but they are not currently connecting the incident with a the discovery viable device found at Fivealley yesterday. 

An Army bomb disposal team made safe ​a ​viable improvised explosive device at a rural house in Fivealley near Birr in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Gardai called the bomb disposal team after a suspected pipe bomb was discovered at a house late last night.

The area was cordoned off and one nearby building was evacuated as army experts based in Athlone were brought in to deal with the device.

They arrived at the scene at 2.20am and inspected the device at the scene.
The Defence Forces confirmed “the device was​made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. It was ​taken away for further examination and was confirmed as viable.” ​The scene was declare safe at 3.10am.  

Once the item has been examined it will  be handed over to the gardai as evidence.
