Men arrested after shots fired at gardai are from edenderry

The two men who were arrested after shots were fired at gardai in Co Kildare last night are from Edenderry.

Gardai in Leixlip arrested the two men, who are in their early 20s, following an incident that occurred at Rathangan at around 1am this morning.

The incident unfolded when gardai were attempting to stop a vehicle and shots were fired at armed officers at Clonmoyle, Rathangan. The weapon used is understood to have been a shotgun.

Gardai pursued the car and both men were arrested a short distance away. Gardai did not return fire and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Both men are detained at Leixlip Garda Station under Section 30, of the Offences Against the State Act. They can be detained for a period of up to 72 hours.The Offaly Independent has confirmed that both men are from Edenderry.

The scene at Clonmoyle between Rathangan and Monasterevin, Co Kildare has been sealed off and local diversions are in place.
