Escaped prisoner apprehended in Clara church

An escaped prisoner from Castlrea Prison was apprehended by gardaí in the midst of an alleged burglary in Clara during the early hours of this morning.

Detectives from Tullamore attended the scene after a reports of break-in at St Brigid's Church.

The incident occurred around 12.45am.

It's understood a 34-year-old man, accompanied by a female, were in the middle of trying to steal a sum of money from the church collection box.

The male, who was serving a sentence in Castlerea Prison, and made good his escape on Saturday last, while recieving treatment at Castlebar Hospital.

He and the woman are due to appear before a sitting of Portlaois court this morning.
