Tullamore Show chosen for 2018 Offaly Person of the Year honour

Europe's biggest one day agricultural event, the Tullamore Show and the FBD National Livestock Show, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Offaly Person of the Year honour.

The identity of the 2018 Offaly Person of the Year was revealed by the award organising committee, a sub-group of the Offaly Association [Dublin] this week.

Since its revival in the early 1990s the Show has gone from strength to strength and celebrated its 25th anniversary recently”, commented the Chairperson of the Offaly Person of the Year judging panel, Ann Carey.

Added Ms Carey: “Headed by Chairperson, Brenda Kiernan and Operations Manager, Freda Kinnarney, the Show celebrates the crème de la crème of Irish agriculture on the second Sunday of August each year at the Butterfield Estate, Blueball.”

The recipient of the inaugural Unsung Hero of Offaly Award is Shinrone Heritage Group historian, Jim Feighery.

Mr Feighery was chairman of the group which organised a special World War I Remembrance Service on Armistice Day, November 11 2018 in Shinrone.

Commented Ann Carey: “Over the years he has completed trojan work in locating the relatives of the 40 or so men from the wider Shinrone area who lost their lives in the Great War.”

The 31st annual award will be presented at a gala dinner dance in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore on Saturday, March 30 next.

Twenty-six people from a variety of backgrounds, including community, business and sport, were nominated for the 31st Person of the Year awards reflecting the rich tapestry of life in Offaly.

Both 2018 awards are generously sponsored by Coolderry native, Mr. Noel Tynan of Le Bon Crubeen Restaurant, Talbot Street, Dublin.
