Birr Town have league title destiny in their own hands

Birr Town can now take the CCFL Senior Division title with a victory in their final league game away to Clara Town on Wednesday next.

The South Offaly side now have their destiny in their own hands after their main challengers Derry Rovers and Monksland United cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw in Edenderry on Wednesday night.

That result means a Birr Town victory in Clara would seal the title.

However, Derry Rovers are not out of contention. A win for the Edenderry side away to Ballinahown on Sunday will secure them the title if Birr lose to Clara on Wednesday. A Derry Rovers win on Sunday will be enough for a playoff with Birr, if Birr and Clara share the spoils.

Monksland's prospects are now slim as they need Birr Town to suffer a defeat in Clara and also Derry Rovers not to win in Ballinahown in order to secure a playoff with Birr Town.

A league title for either Birr Town or Derry Rovers will end a run of 12 consecutive league championships for Athlone-based sides. The last side from outside Athlone to win the top division of the CCFL was Clara Town in 2006/2007.
