Former post office could be turned into restaurant

A former post office in O'Connor Square could be transformed into a restaurant, should new plans progress.

Luke Coyle of Klegon Ltd has signalled in a planning notice that a new application will be lodged shortly for the listed building which was built in 1909, seeking approval to change the use of the building from a post office to an eatery.

An extension on the ground floor to the rear is also proposed, to include an expansion of the planned dining area with toilets, kitchen, stores and other services .

It's also envisaged that the former office use will change to two one bedroom apartments on the 1st floor and a two bedroom unit on the second with associated services.

Built in 1909 probably to a design by J. Howard Pentland, this former post office forms an integral part of O'Connor Square, according to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, and it still has the striking post office lettering above the door.

It retains many original features like the limestone doorcase, the fine cast-iron lettering and spider web fanlight .
