ODVSS adds counselling and career coaching supports to its services

Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service has announced two new additional services for clients from May 1.

Following support from Safe Ireland, ODVSS is now providing free counselling session to clients who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. Anne Clarke, Manager of ODVSS, welcomed the provision of counselling.

“Clients need a safe space to process what they have experienced, many clients want to be able to move on from the abuse and not be defined by it, counselling supports them on their journey. We are delighted to welcome Margaret Bassett as our new inhouse counsellor who joins our already experienced specialist team of domestic violence support staff.

“This new initiative will make a significant difference to our client’s lives,” said Ms Clarke.

Over 78% of clients who contact ODVSS will experience economic abuse, this is a significant barrier for victims who may want to leave an abusive relationship. ODVSS new career coach project will provide one to one support to clients and explore their options around returning to work, college, or training. The aim of the “Begin Again” project which is supported by the Giving Circle of Ireland is help clients towards financial independence New career coach Mary Cronin will work with clients to explore their options. Both services will be available online and by phone, clients will be offered face to face when HSE regulations allow next month.

In 2020 ODVSS recorded a 50% rise in the number of people contact the service for support, over 185 new clients contacted the service for the first time. Covid19 was very difficult for people who were experiencing domestic abuse, they found themselves in lockdown with their abusers 24/7 with all supports and respite diminished, stated Ms Clarke, it was very important for the service to find ways to reach in and continue to provide vital supports.
