Shane Lowry - set to tee off in the US Open later today (Thursday).

Lowry's bid for US Open glory attracts support from punters

Shane Lowry is preparing to compete in the US Open at Torrey Pines later today (Thursday) - and he is attracting plenty of support from Irish punters to secure a second Major title.

Lowry is due to tee off alongside Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Francesco Molinari of Italy at 3.29pm (Irish time).

The Offaly man was joint second in the 2016 US Open, behind winner Dustin Johnson, when the tournament was held in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

The Clara native should be in confident mood this week, having posted four top ten finishes since March, including a fourth the PGA Championship and a sixth on his most recent appearance at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

The Open Championship winner in 2019, Lowry had been a 50/1 shot to double his major tally this week, but BoyleSports have cut him into 33/1 following some strong backing from Irish punters. The current world number 41 has also been backed down to just 3/1 from 11/2 to finish inside the top ten.

Spaniard Jon Rahm, whose first win on the PGA Tour came at this week’s San Diego venue, has been cleared to compete after recording successive negative Covid tests and is now set to start as favourite at 9/1.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy also has some strong course form to build on and is an 18/1 shot to win his first major championship since 2014.

BoyleSports spokesperson Lawrence Lyons said: “Shane Lowry has posted three top tens in his last four starts on the PGA Tour so with ten places up for grabs for each-way backers this week, it’s little surprise to see he’s coming in for strong support.

"It’s showing little sign of slowing down either, so we’ve had to go 33/1 from 50/1 and he looks set to tee off at the shortest price he has ever been in any major to date.”

Speaking about his prospects in the tournament, Lowry said: "A US Open for me is like a true test of golf, every part of your game, every part of your mentality will be required to do well in this game.

"I’m quite happy where my game is at. Tournaments are won on the greens. Give me a really good putting week, and I’ll be hopefully there or thereabouts," added the 34-year-old.
