Cllr Declan Harvey, new Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council

Harvey elected Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council

The Offaly County Council AGM took place this afternoon to elect Cllr. John Carroll’s successor. The AGM was held over a Zoom call to comply with current public health guidelines.

Cllr. Declan Harvey, Fianna Fáil has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach for Offaly. Cllr. Frank Moran, also Fianna Fáil proposed the election of Cllr. Harvey and was seconded by Cllr. Danny Owens. Harvey was first elected to Tullamore Town Council in 2009 and to the Tullamore Municipal District in 2014 and 2019. He has also previously served as the Chairperson for the Tullamore Municipal District in 2017, and is current chair of Offaly Local Development Committee.

Speaking about the new role, Cllr. Harvey said “I’m deeply honoured to be elected Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council and I thank my colleagues for placing their trust in me.”

He also thanked former party members for their support. “I want to thank former Cllr. John Flanagan and former Taoiseach Brian Cowen for putting their faith in me to stand for the local elections in 2008. They saw something I didn’t see.”

Cllr. Robert McDermott, Fianna Fáil was elected as the Leas-Cathaoirleach. He was first elected to Offaly County Council in 2019. Cllr. Eddie Fitzpatrick proposed McDermott for the position and was seconded by Cllr Tony McCormack, both Fianna Fáil.

Cllr. McDermott thanked his fellow Councillors for their vote of confidence.
