Garda hospitalised with facial injuries following incident

A garda was taken to hospital last night with facial injuries following what's been described as a “violent public order incident” in Tullamore.

Two males were arrested after the incident in William Street, a post on the Garda Síochána Laois Offaly Facebook said this morning (Monday).

Both men in their 20s have since been released without charge, a garda spokesperson in Tullamore has confirmed to the Offaly Independent.

It's understood officers were dealing with a public order incident in the area when the assault occurred.

An investigation is underway and they are appealing for anyone who was on William Street between the junction of Harbour Street and Kilbeggan Bridge between 10.45pm and 11.15pm to come forward.

Anyone who has dashcam footage should call Tullamore Garda Station 057 9327600.

“We are aware there were a number of potential witnesses to this incident and ask that they come forward,” the social media post stated.

The injured officer has been released from hospital.
