Success at Youth World Championships for local MMA fighters

Two MMA fighters from Offaly who train with SBG Tullamore recently represented Ireland at IMMAF Youth World Championships in Bulgaria, with one being the first teenager from Tullamore to bring home a silver medal.

Jordan Scully, 17, won his first three matches by decision and stoppages due to triangle chokes. He competed against MMA youth fighters from Bahrain, Lebanon, Czech Republic before meeting an Irish opponent in the All-Ireland Welterweight Final.

Jordan won a silver medal, losing out to Max Lally from Kildare, when he was submitted by arm bar.

Bernie Ward, 16, also took to the cage against a Russian opponent, but narrowly missed out on the win during round two when he was defeated by arm bar.

Both Bernie and Jordan started training with SBG in their early teens through the Growing Gorillas Programme.

Coach Kieran Davern said about the boys’ achievements:

“The future is bright for both of these lads and we couldn’t be prouder. We are very grateful and thankful to everyone for all the support over the last few months.

“We’ll build on these performances and come back even better next year.”
