Golf Ireland among groups to receive Offaly council funding

Announcement comes as Shane Lowry and Europe begin Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits

Offaly County Council has announced funding of €30,000 for five governing bodies to deliver their participation programmes in the county.

Cllr Declan Harvey (cathaoirleach) said the council is delighted to be able to fund a range of different sports programmes in Offaly, and in the week that Shane Lowry travels to Whistling Straits to represent Europe at the Ryder Cup, Golf Ireland will be one of the five bodies to be supported.

“Shane is one of the most inspirational sports people to come out of Offaly and he came through the golfing system as an amateur,” said Cllr Harvey.

“Our grant of €3,600 to Golf Ireland will hopefully now inspire others in the county.”

The funding for Golf Ireland will be used to deliver golf training in DEIS primary schools and also for females attending secondary school.

A grant of €11,891 has been awarded to the FAI towards its range of football in the community initiatives.

Athletics Ireland is approved for €6,845 towards the growth of juvenile athletics in Clara, while Hockey Ireland and the Camogie Association are in line to receive €4,050 and €3,624 respectively.
