Offaly exotic mushroom producer wins prestigious Blas na hÉireann award

A producer of exotic musrooms in Offaly has been awarded a prestigious honour at the Blas na hÉireann awards, which have been dubbed the 'Oscars of the Food World' in this country.

Garryhinch Wood Exotic Mushrooms, an organic farm located on the banks of the river Barrow in East Offaly, won the 'Chef’s Larder' award for its Exotic Mushroom Organic Shiitake.

The farm cultivates its own exotic mushrooms on wooden blocks made only from trees sourced from sustainably managed forests. These tasty mushrooms have a high nutritional as well as medicinal value.

Garryhinch Wood Exotic Mushrooms grow a variety of mushrooms such as Shiitake, Maitake, White Beech, Lions Mane, Forest Nameko and a variety of Oyster mushrooms.

The company is among the SuperValu Food Academy Producers which picked up a total of 51 awards – 15 Gold, 17 Silver and 19 Bronze at the Blas na hÉireann awards.

The winners included Roll It Pastry (Meath), Filligans (Donegal), Isle of Crackers (Wexford), Cape Clear Distillery (Cork), Sushi King (Dublin) and Love A Little Sauces (Donegal).

Tipperary’s Tullahay Farm won ‘Best New Product’ and a Gold award for their Raspberry Bramble Fruit Flavoured Whey Drink.

There were also four winners in the ‘Chef’s Choice’ category for the Food Academy including Fancy Fungi Mushrooms (Wexford), Roll It Pastry (Meath) & Olly’s Farm (Dublin).

Fiona and Malcom Falconer, of Wexford-based Wild About took home the coveted ‘Supreme Champion' award, the top accolade in Blas na hÉireann.
