A view of Banagher

New Banagher inspired pamphlet of poetry and songs set for online launch

Poet Jessica Traynor worked with the community of Banagher to produce a new pamphlet of poems and songs during 2020/2021.

The launch of this pamphlet takes place on this coming Thursday, December 2 over Zoom and will feature a short talk by local historian James Scully, a reading of poems by Jessica Traynor, and the screening of a video of a new song written by Banagher College Transition years. It was composed by Elaine Agnew and performed by the St Rynagh's sixth class.

All are welcome to attend the Zoom launch but registration in advance is essential. Email arts@offalycoco.ie to register.

The suite of poems is inspired by the history and folklore of Banagher with Saint Rynagh, Sir Mathew De Rensi, Jane Walker, The Fox Sisters, Charlotte Brontë and The Woman of Garbally inspiring poems of rich imagination and colour.

Local cures, weather lore, riddles and traditions provide the source material for more of the writing.
