Harriers extends warm welcome as Hospice mile returns

Tullamore Harriers AC is preparing for its annual Hospice Mile event on Christmas morning next Saturday.

The club is extending the welcome mat for people to call in any time between 10am to 12 noon. People can run or walk a lap of the track, many laps of the track or indeed compete in the Hospice Mile race itself which kicks off at 11am.

Unfortunately, the club was unable to host the event last year due to Covid restrictions, so the event is extra special this Christmas morning.

Offaly Hospice Foundation is a voluntary fundraising committee founded in 1990 to financially support palliative care services within the county.

Funds raised by Offaly Hospice Foundation have been used to employ specialist nurses and carers allowing patients to be looked after in their own home. All funds raised helps to support patients and their loved ones when the emphasis is gone from curing the patient to providing them with the best quality of life possible at this precious time.

Palliative care has advanced from cancer only care to the care of patients with end stage heart failure, dementia, chronic lung disease and neurological diseases.

In 2019, the Offaly Hospice Foundation launched the Midlands Hospice Building Fund which aims to raise enough money to fund the building of a specialist palliative care unit in the midlands to serve Offaly and surrounding counties.

This specialist 16-bed unit, which will be sited on the grounds of the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, is estimated to cost 10 million euro so fundraising is essential and Offaly Hospice now need donations more than ever. Your donation will make a difference to this deserving cause.

Tullamore Harriers are urging everyone to join the event on Christmas morning in the club between 10am and 12.00.
