Revealed: the number of Offaly motorists with penalty points

Over 10,000 motorists in Offaly have points on their licence – with 22 having the maximum 12 points, the latest figures from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have revealed.

The figures, which give the position as at the end of October, show that 10,068 motorists have points.

A year earlier, there were 8,457 Offaly motorists with points, while the figure for October 2019 was 8,506.

Analysis of the October 2021 total of 10,068 shows that of that number, 7,004 have three points, 1,300 are on six points and 628 have 5 points.

At the bottom end of the scale, there are 19 motorists with just one point.

The offence most likely to land motorists on the naughty list is speeding, other figures from the RSA reveal.

In total, up to October, 12,895 notices were issued to motorists from Offaly

And the RSA’s breakdown on the type and number of notices issued to Offaly drivers for traffic offences shows that 8,660 were for speeding, with the second most common offence being that of driving a vehicle while using a mobile phone, affecting 1,470 drivers.

Over 500 notices related to failure to wear seat belts and 116 were for failing to restrain a child; 301 were for driving without reasonable consideration; 127 for failing to obey traffic lights and around 50 were for bald tyres.

The issue of learner drivers driving while unaccompanied landed 334 motorists in bother with 219 notices issued to drivers for non-display of L plates and 51 for failing to display an N plate.

Some 386 notices issued were for use of a vehicle without an NCT cert.
