Local hospitals experiencing "very busy period"

Members of the public are being urged to "consider their care options" before presenting to the emergency departments at either Tullamore or Portlaoise hospitals today (Wednesday) with both hospitals experiencing a "very busy period" at the moment.

A statement issued by the HSE last night on behalf of the Midland Regional Hospitals at Tullamore and Portlaoise said that "an increased number of people" are attending the emergency departments at both hospitals, and advises people to only attend emergency services "if absolutely essential."

The Hospitals are reminding members of the public to consider their care options before presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). "If you are unwell, please go to your GP or pharmacy in the first instance" the statement advises, reminding the public that "it is essential that we protect our emergency services for those who require emergency care."

Members of the public who suspect they may be having a heart attack or stroke are urged not to delay contacting 999 or 112 in an emergency.

People are also being advised to follow the latest public health guidance announced by Government to help protect and maintain essential services in the current challenging times.

If you have to attend the ED in emergency situation please;

· ensure you wear a mask,

· practice social distancing and

· ensure you tell the triage personnel if you have any signs/symptoms of Covid.
