Youngsters get state of the art new diabetes treatment

Two young local people who are patients at the Paediatric Diabetes Service at MRH Mullingar made their own little bit of history last week.

Zofia Piet and Maurycy Tkaczyk, who are both from Tullamore, became the first Type 1 diabetes patients in Ireland from outside Dublin to start on the new Tandem Control-IQ insulin pump system.

The new state of the art pump system automatically adjusts insulin to reduce both high and low-blood sugars by working on information from a Dexcom glucose monitor, worn on the skin. This represents a significant step forward for the once beleaguered diabetes service which shut temporarily in 2021 due to lack of staff.
