Tullamore Tidy Towns launches new Action Plan

Tullamore Tidy Towns recently launched their 2023 Action Plan which also showcased their latest anti-litter project.

The new plan was officially launched in Tullamore Municipal District Offices on Wednesday, April 19.

The plan will focus on community, streetscape and public places, green spaces and landscaping, nature and biodiversity, sustainability, tidiness and litter control, residential streets and housing areas and approach roads, streets and lanes.

Chairperson of the Tullamore Tidy Towns, Shane Murray, said the purpose of the action plan is to make Tullamore a nicer place to live and covers a multitude of things. “The plan gives us a roadmap of where to go,” He added that Tullamore Tidy Towns received a medal to signify that the town is just 15 points away from being eligible to win the competition and has managed to attain this medal for the past six years.

Shane added that the Chamber of Commerce and Tullamore Municipal District have been very helpful but that the group needs more volunteers. “The biggest area of improvement is litter picking, that's a big issue.”

He emphasised the variety of work that volunteers can get involved in as two local people are conducting a bat survey for the group and a garden was recently set up to give Ukrainians living in local hotels a leisure space.

The Chairperson said that they ran a campaign recently on dashboard dining and they want to build more on that.”We're getting a lot more interest in it (Tullamore Tidy Towns.) I think people are starting to realise we're so close to winning.”

As part of the plan actions will include; reviewing the long-term plan regularly, working closely with schools, entering special awards, promote key events, regularly review presentation of commercial buildings, carry out an accessibility audit of the town, continue to enhance Lloyd Park, support extension of Greenway and encourage addition of supporting infrastructure, consider the development of a natural heritage trail/app, appoint tree volunteers/ warden to manage trees in certain roads/access points, link with Waterway’s Ireland’s Education Unit to advance biodiversity projects along canals, promote sustainable school transport and support the Annual Spring Clean.

The Tidy Towns group is also calling on local community groups, individuals and residents associations to participate in the Tullamore Spring Clean next weekend.

On Saturday, April 29, from 10am to 10.30am, the Tidy Town team will be on hand at the Library in O'Connor Square, with bags, disposable gloves, a limited supply of litter pickers and hi-vis jackets for those taking taking part in the spring clean. The bags can be returned to this collection point afterwards.
