The new water treatment plant in Birr.

New treatment plant in place as part of €10m Birr water supply upgrade

Uisce Éireann said the water supply for more than 5,000 residents of Birr had been secured into the future as a result of a €10 million project it undertook in partnership with Offaly County Council.

In a statement today (Tuesday), Uisce Éireann announced the completion of the Birr Water Supply Scheme.

It said the project had included the construction of a new water treatment plant, the upgrade of the intake works and pumphouse, as well as the construction of a new treated water storage reservoir.

Commenting on the scheme, Denise Treacy, programme manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We are delighted to have completed this project, ensuring a safe and reliable supply of drinking water for over 5,000 people in Birr.

"This investment in our infrastructure is a testament to our commitment to providing high-quality services to our customers while helping to reduce disruptions to supply.

"The delivery of this project will not only help increase the security and resilience of the drinking water supply, but it will also support existing and future residential and commercial development."

The project was delivered by contractors Murphy Process Engineering Limited, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Birr's new treatment plant has capacity to treat 3,600 cubic metres of water per day, while the treated water storage reservoir can accommodate 2,000 cubic metres of water (a cubic metre equals 1,000 litres of water).
