Aldi store could create 30 new jobs in Tullamore

Aldi has officially confirmed plans for a second store in Tullamore next year, a move the German discounter estimated could create 30 new jobs in the town.

The official confirmation comes after new planning documents lodged with Offaly County Council revealed that the retail giant is proposing to open a discount foodstore on a prime site in the centre of Tullamore.

Although the company has remained tight-lipped about its plans to date, an application submitted to the local authority by Dublin-based planning and development consultants, John Spain Associates on behalf of Aldi Stores (Ireland) Limited, declared their intention to proceed with "an Aldi discount store" development.

The application, which was submitted on June 27 last, is for an ESB substation and switch room on land “at and between O’Connell Street and Offaly Street” in the centre of the town. The planning documents stated that the substation and switch room will be located in the northeast corner of a car park serving a mixed used development “including an Aldi discount foodstore”. The site for the proposed new store was formerly the location for the hugely-popular Texas department store, and the portion of the site which is earmarked for a new Aldi foodstore is owned by Weavermay Ltd, headed up by local businessman, Tony Flanagan.

When contacted by the Offaly Independent on the plans, Colin Breslin, Managing Director of Buying and Services, Aldi Ireland said: “Aldi can confirm that we have (submitted) planning permission to open a second store in Tullamore in 2024. “The new store will see the creation of 30 new permanent jobs in the town, while up to 50 jobs will be supported during the construction period.

“Every new Aldi store brings greater choice, quality and value to shoppers, while creating important well-paid jobs in the community. We look forward to developing and opening the store, and bringing unbeatable Aldi value to even more people in Tullamore.”
