Offaly Alzheimer's Memory Walk set for Tullamore this month

A fundraising walk in support of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland will be held in Tullamore on Sunday, September 24, at 11am.

The local event is part of the Alzheimer’s Annual Memory Walk initiative which will see walks happening at more than 30 locations across the country on the same day.

Fergus Timmons, local champion for the Offaly branch of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, will lead the walk in Tullamore, while Edenderry comedian Neil Delamere is among the well-known figures showing support for the event.

The Offaly Alzheimer's Memory Walk starts at 11am from the Grand Canal Greenway, and it will be a leisurely 5k walk to ensure everyone can get involved.

"I am delighted to be a local champion for the 2023 Alzheimer's Memory Walk," said Fergus Timmons.

He added that the event would "raise awareness and funds for the services that the Alzheimer Society of Ireland provides across the county," and he encouraged Offaly people to get behind the walk by registering now for their participation pack at: www.memorywalk.ie

The Memory Walk event gives families, friends and those living with dementia the opportunity to come together, honour, celebrate and raise funds for the support services that The Alzheimer Society of Ireland provides.

The charity is aiming to secure over 3,000 walkers across Ireland to participate and help raise funds for vital services that support so many people living with dementia and those who care for them.

These services include Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.

An estimated 64,000 people live with dementia in Ireland, which according to leading dementia experts will more than double in the next 25 years to over 150,000 by 2045.

Registration for the walk on September 24 costs €5 for kids and €18 for adults, and this includes a participation pack with a Memory Walk t-shirt.

The closing date for registration to receive your participation pack before the walk is 12 noon on Wednesday, September 20.

For those who cannot walk on the day, they can still support the Memory Walk by donating at www.alzheimer.ie.
