Tullamore-based pet health firm urges pet owners to be aware of signs of osteoarthritis

Tullamore-based pet health firm Zoetis Ireland is on a mission to promote the well-being of pets by urging pet owners to take proactive steps in understanding and addressing one of the most common causes of pain in their dogs and cats as September is Animal Pain Awareness Month.

Have you noticed recent changes in your pet’s behaviour? Changes such as not sleeping well, not wanting to play, or acting aggressively? If so, they may be showing signs of pain relating to an underlying disease.

Affecting approximately 40% of all dogs and cats, Osteoarthritis or OA, is a common condition which can lead to pain, discomfort, and reduced mobility in our four-legged friends. Surprisingly, it can affect all types of dogs, no matter their age, size, or breed. Very often owners simply put these symptoms down to aging without realising that they could be due to an underlying condition. They also may not realise that there are treatment options available which could significantly enhance their pet’s quality of life.

Veterinary Manager at Zoetis Ireland, Lesley Hobson, explained: "Signs of osteoarthritis or OA are sometimes subtle but as with humans, always impact quality of life. Recognising the signs of OA in your dog or cat is crucial to ensuring their well-being. This September we are encouraging pet owners to take a proactive stance in learning about this condition and initiating conversations with their vet.

"By addressing OA early on, owners can enhance their pets' comfort and mobility, allowing them to lead healthier and happier lives. Our simple online assessment tool will help you determine whether your pet might benefit from a visit to your vet for diagnosis and treatment.”

Some of the signs of osteoarthritis to look out for include:

- Limping

- Stiffness or ‘slowing down’

- Slow to get up after resting

- Difficulty with stairs or reluctance to jump up or down

- Changes in behaviour (e.g., grumpier)

- Restlessness at night

Zoetis Ireland has created an online resource dedicated to educating pet owners about the signs and symptoms of OA. The websites, available at OAinDogs.ie or OAinCats.ie provide valuable information to help identify the signs and symptoms of OA and understanding its impact. Having made an assessment, if you believe your pet may be showing signs of OA, the next step is to make an appointment to see your vet who will be able to assess and advise on any treatment that may be required.

Zoetis Ireland believes in the power of collaboration between pet owners and their vet to provide the best care for their pets. The newly launched online resource aims to empower pet owners with the knowledge they need to engage in meaningful discussions with their family vet.

Zoetis Ireland encourages all pet owners to initiate conversations with their vet today if they have any concerns about their pets’ health and take proactive steps to ensure the long-term health and happiness of their beloved pets.
