Lloyd Town Park in Tullamore is one of 150 parks across Europe to be awarded a prestigious Green Flag, making it the eight consecutive occasion for the local park to be named among the list of winners.

The awards, which were announced today (Wednesday) by An Taisce Environmental Education, benchmark excellence in the management of green spaces which are free and open to the public.

A host of European countries, inluding Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain, participated in the 2023 Green Flag Awards Scheme, and a total of 150 parks were awarded flags today, with Ireland leading the way in securing 101 Green Flags.

The Green Flag Award Scheme is the mark of quality parks and green space and is recognised throughout the world. Parks are only awarded for exceeding tough environmental standards in green space management and excellence visitor attractions.

The Green Flag Awards are judged every year by a peer jury of green space experts, who visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement.

Located at Cormac Street, the five-acre Lloyd Town Park, was established in 1987 and officially opened to the public in 2008, after extensive refurbishment. Over the years, a playground, skate park, basketball court and outdoor exercise equipment area have been added to the park, which is managed by Offaly County Council.
