The late Eddie Enright

Sadness at passing of Birr publican and father of singer/songwriter, Mundy.

Local singer/songwriter, Mundy, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his Dad, well-known Birr publican, Eddie Enright, who passed away yesterday (Monday) in his 86th year.

In a touching Facebook post, Mundy described his beloved Dad as “one of my best friends” and “a real one off” and spoke lovingly of how he could tell him “almost everything.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of the late Eddie Enright smoking a cigarette in his son's dressing room at Vicar St in 2006 above a 'No Smoking' sign, and Mundy said he felt “very fortunate” to have had his Dad in his life for so long. He described the last few years of his Dad's life as “tough” especially during Covid, which “really confused him.”

Mundy also thanked the staff who had looked after his late father in Ealga and Eliza Lodge Nursing Homes and also in Tullamore and Galway.

Eddie Enright passed away peacefully in Ealga Lodge Nursing Home, Shinrone, in the early hours of yesterday morning (Monday).

The Enright name is synonymous with Fine Gael, and Eddie was the brother of former Fine Gael TD, Tom Enright, and uncle of former TD, Olwyn Enright. Following his move to Ormond House in Birr from his native Shinrone, he also served for a number of years as a Fine Gael Town Councillor as well as being one of the best-known publicans and auctioneers in the town.

His remains will repose at Boyd's Funeral Home, Birr (Eircode: R42 YF75) this Thursday, September 28, from 5pm to 7.30pm, and Funeral Mass will take place in St. Brendan's Church, Birr at 11am on Friday morning, September 29, followed by burial in Clonoghill Cemetery.

Eddie Enright is predeceased by his sister Marie (Poole) and will be sadly missed by his loving wife Antionette, his sons Niall and Edmond (aka Mundy), daughter-in-law Sarah, his adored grandchildren Eden and Belle, his brothers Tom (Birr) and Anselm (Dublin), his sister Helen (Portlaoise), brothers-in -law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
