Ryder Cup victory a career moment that Lowry will ‘never forget’

Offaly's golfing superstar Shane Lowry played an important role in Europe's Ryder Cup victory in Rome last weekend, as his team claimed a fantastic win against the USA.

Lowry said that it was a week he will “never forget” as Europe achieved a 16.5 to 11.5 win at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.

It was Lowry's second time to compete in the prestigous tournament but his first involvement in an European victory which was one of his biggest dreams since he became professional in 2009.

Lowry was a wild card selection by team captain Luke Donald which Lowry justified by his play over the three-day Ryder Cup. Lowry and Sepp Straka had a 2 and 1 win against Rickie Fowler and Colin Norikawa in the foursomes event on Friday, September 29.

The Clara man didn't play in the afternoon but joined Straka in the foursomes again on Saturday morning. They lost out on the 16th, 4 and 2 against Max Homa and Brian Harman.

Lowry again played very well on Sunday in the singles event, taking a half point off Jordan Spieth.

The European team aas confident of a win when Tommy Fleetwood won the 17th for a 3 and 1 win, taking a half point off Rickie Fowler. Following a poor start for Lowry, he fought back and went one behind on the 15th, won 16 and 17 and then lost 18 for a half.

The ambition and drive of the European team was clearly on display during the Ryder Cup with Lowry having to break up a dispute between teammate Rory McIlroy and American caddy Jim Mackay on Saturday evening. Lowry was also plainly frustrated following caddy Joe LaCava's exuberant celebrations after Patrick Cantlay putt while McIlroy was lining up.
