Elderly people "afraid to go out at night" due to lack of street lights in Tullamore town

An Independent Councillor in Tullamore has claimed that elderly people are "afraid to go out at night" due to a lack of street lights at several locations around the town.

Cllr Sean O'Brien has called on the Council to take action in relation to public lighting around the town as a matter of urgency, and has pledged to raise the issue at this week's meeting of Offaly County Council.

"Residents in several estates in Tullamore have been in contact with me about public lights which have been out of order for months. Almost all of the lights in one section of Arden View are not working and these lights service an area with 50 houses. Family members tell me that their elderly parents are afraid to go out at night due to lack of street lights" claimed Cllr O' Brien.

The local representative said he has reported the faulty lights "many times" both to the Council and also to the lighting contractors in charge of repairing the lights. "Residents have also reported the issues many times, which have been ongoing for at least the past two years and it is simply not acceptable any longer" he added.

I will be raising this issue again at the Council meeting this Thursday and I hope to get some resolution of the matter" concluded Cllr O' Brien.
