Action needed on Convent Road sewage and flooding issues

Independent Councillor Sean O' Brien has called for action after more flooding occurred in the Convent View areas of Tullamore town over the weekend, which left sewage strewn on footpaths and on the road.

"This issue with flooding and overflowing sewers on Convent View and adjacent to Callary St. simply has to be addressed by Uisce Eireann(Irish Water) immediately. On Saturday morning the residents in Convent View, Callary St., Kearney Park, Connolly Park and Putttaughaun area had to contend with flooding and overflowing sewers. As the flooding remained residents could not flush their toilets. Sewage was strewn on the footpaths and on the road and sewage was flowing into the Canal" claimed Cllr O' Brien.

"I was there early on Saturday morning and witnessed residents trying to negotiate the sewage soiled footpaths. Walkers had difficulty entering the walkway on the Canal. The sewage infected floodwaters was being pushed into the footpaths by passing traffic. This has been discussed at Council meetings on numerous occasions and we were promised action by Usice Eireann. I contacted them on Saturday morning and asked for immediate action to have the floodwater cleared and the roads and path washed down" said the local Councillor.

"I also informed the Council's Area Engineer and thankfully he organised a contractor to have the area cleaned up. I will be asking the Council Management to put pressure on Uisce Eireann to have this issue sorted once and for all. The sewage system and wastewater system here is simply not capable of dealing with the demand after many new houses were built in the Puttaughaun area" concluded Cllr O' Brien.
