Road closure in centre of Edenderry in place for five weeks

The L-1028-2 Fr McWey Street from the junction with the R401 (Carrick Road) to the junction of the L-1028-3 at Dunnes Stores car park in Edenderry will be closed until Friday February 23.

The five-week road closure commenced on Monday last and is necessary to facilitate enabling works for the Edenderry Inner Relief Road phase 2. A diversion route will be in place for the duration. Offaly County Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Engineer with Edenderry Town Council, John Briody, said that the works will consist of ducting for water sewage along with the realignment of the new junction.

He added that "there's a lot of work involved" in relation to the digs of the sewer with two to three metre digs being carried out.

Speaking about the reason for the five-week duration of the closure, Mr Briody said: "There is a lot of work to be done down there in that time. It's for health and safety reasons and it's just not straightforward."

"We're trying to minimise it (the closure) as best we can. There's no other option to carry out the work safely."

Manager for the Bagel Bar Coffee House in Edenderry, Marlena Brodowicz, said that the cafe has been "very quiet" since the road closure commenced but that she didn't know if the closure was the reason for that. She added that Edenderry Shopping Centre was also quiet.

"This week is very quiet. Last week was not too bad at all. Usually, January's quiet but this week is very quiet in the Bagel Bar."

However, Ms Brodowicz concluded that the "road has to be done anyway."
