Local councillor calls for action on dangerous trees in Kilbride Park

Independent Councillor, Sean O' Brien, has called for action to be taken with the dangerous poplar trees in Kilbride St park along the canal.

"The recent storms highlighted the danger posed by the poplar trees in Kilbride St. Park. The storm caused large branches from these trees to be broken off and carried by the strong winds into Clontarf Rd. These branches were deposited in residents front gardens. Fortunately, nobody was injured as some of those branches were big and heavy. The residents have been in contact with me to have some action taken as we could well have another storm" stated Cllr O' Brien.

"These trees are also a danger to the residents in apartments nearby and the bungalows in Kilbride Park. I have been in contact with the Area Engineer about this and I asked that some action be taken. I have been informed that a survey of these trees was carried out in 2021 and it was recommended that these trees are unsuitable for the area and should be removed.

Pruning was not recommended as this species responds to pruning with vigorous growth of branches and roots. I am planning to arrange a meeting between the residents and the Area Engineer to progress this issue further," concluded Cllr O' Brien.
