Clare filmmaker to headline live show in Birr

Documentary film maker and underwater cameraman Ken O'Sullivan will headline a live show, 'Into the Deep' a live show based on his latest book this weekend.

The Clare man will speak about his adventures exploring the North Atlantic Ocean encountering enormous whales, monstrous sharks and exploring the amazing underwater world in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre this Friday, February 23 at 8pm.

The live show is a mix of film and stories from Ken’s 18-year long career. He pays homage to his family’s 250-year history on Fenit Island, Co. Kerry and the ancient maritime culture. Ken will show videos and give insight and backstories into what it’s like trying to navigate this vast ocean and film some of the largest animals ever to have lived.

Ken said: “I’ve been passionate all my life about the ocean and I am really excited to be bringing my live tour to Birr and to share the magic of the ocean. We have a precious natural resource on our doorstep and it is important to preserve it and to educate people about the unique marine life that exists in our waters.”

He will also share anecdotes, observations and all together fascinating facts about the creatures that live off the coast of Ireland. Expect close encounters with sharks, intimate conversations with jellyfish and ballet dancing with whales.

Ken has produced and filmed seventeen documentaries, including North Atlantic – The Dark Ocean which was broadcast on RTE this summer. His work which has been broadcast in 25 countries and has won awards all over the world, recently winning the Grand Prix award at the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam, beating BBC’s Arctic, Our Frozen Planet. He also worked as a cameraman for the BBC Natural History Unit.

Ken has been described as a “ welcome addition to the premier league of natural-born TV naturalists” by UK Times. Meanwhile, the Irish Independent remarked: “The footage Ken and his crew get of the deep ocean and its inhabitants is extraordinary, up there with anything to be seen in The Blue Planet or any other outstanding nature documentaries, and O’Sullivan’s passion for his subject is both evident and admirable.”
