Former Offaly councillor to run for Independent Ireland
Edenderry's Fergus McDonnell has joined the new party, Independent Ireland, and is to contest the forthcoming local elections in the Edenderry area.
In a statement today, Independent Ireland leader Deputy Michael Collins said: "Fergus has served the people of his community for decades, his dedication to community work, his knowledge of politics combined with his authenticity and passion makes it an absolute pleasure for me to announce his candidacy for the Edenderry Local Electoral Area."
Independent Ireland was set up recently by two TDs, Michael Collins and Richard O'Donoghue. Roscommon/Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice has also recently joined the party.
The party said McDonnell is a stalwart champion of community development and would bring "a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted commitment to serving others".
It said his political journey is one "deeply intertwined with community service and grassroots advocacy".
"As a devoted husband, father of four adult children, and proud grandfather to nine grandchildren, he understands first hand the importance of building a better future for generations to come. Throughout his career, McDonnell has worn many hats, each reflecting his unwavering dedication to community well-being. From his role as a part-time school transport driver to his tenure as a director and manager of North Offaly Community Development Network in Daingean, McDonnell has consistently worked to provide essential services and support to older people in his community. His 18-year stint as a home carer speaks volumes about his commitment to those in need.
"Prior to his community development work, McDonnell was a self-employed local cab operator and a fitter at Bord Na Mona, where he also served as a national craft union representative. His diverse professional background underscores his ability to navigate complex issues and advocate effectively for the interests of others. His extensive public service record includes serving as a former member of Edenderry Town Council from 1985 to 2014, during which he held the position of Chairman on multiple occasions. McDonnell also served on Offaly County Council and the Midland Regional Authority from 2004 to 2009 and chaired the Edenderry Joint Policing Committee from 2009 to 2014. McDonnell's educational achievements include a BA in Politics and training & development qualifications, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the challenges facing his constituents," it said.
